In 1960, George, and a group of veterans, decided to try to establish a branch of the Canadian Legion in Wedgeport, Nova Scotia.  Through hard work and perseverance, they received a charter for Branch 155 in 1961.  George served as Treasurer for a number of years, and remained on the Executive until his death in 1977.  Branch 155 prospers to this day.

My radio controlled flying model of George's Spitfire, KH-M, SM313.  It has a 5' wingspan, weighs about 10 pounds, and flies like a dream.

This is a real Mk XVI Spitfire.  It is part of the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum in Manston, England.   As it turns out, this particular Spitfire was assigned to 403 squadron on 18 April 1945, and was flown by Hank Zary (George's Commanding Officer) and Van Sainsbury (George's element lead on the day he was brought down).  The museum has restored the airplane to April 1945 livery.  It looks like any other Spitfire in 403 looked at the time.  Notice the four victory markings beneath the cockpit; they are legitimate.

  • 21 Apr 1945, Bf 109 fighter. Pilot, S/L H.P.M Zary, DFC

  • 25 Apr 1945, Fw 189, twin engined reconnaissance aircraft. Pilot, F/O D. Leslie

  • 1 May 1945, Fw 190 fighter. Pilot, F/O R. B. Young

  • 3 May 1945, He 111 Bomber. Pilot F/O Fred Town.

I visited the museum in May 2010.  When I showed up with extracts from George's log I was treated like royalty.  Click here to be taken to the Spitfire Museum's web site.
